Eco-Friendliness
Environment is one of the top priorities in Webberz International. Saving and Conserving are done on a continuous basis. Following steps have been taken to save the environment:
| Task |
Wood Saved |
| The day-to-day paper based notices have been replaced with the e-notices. This was a huge step as all the faculty and staff in New York, Egypt and India were trained to use computers. They were trained to open email accounts, send emails, receive and enact on them. The usual practise of signing notices was done away with. The usual practise of taking prints of email will be also finished. From 1st January, 2008 all paper based correspondance would be completey finished. |
1000 kgs |
| Every person is required to submit monthly estimates and reports every month end. The practise has been completely done away with using google docs. |
100 Kgs |
| The lesson plans are using 5000 kg of equivalent wood which have also been partially replaced with CDs and E-Plans. Most of them have been replaced but the remaining would be replaced by 2008 end.
|
1000 kgs |
| No cheques would be issued to any staff or faculty. Electronic trasfers have been implemented. The saving is also indirect in terms of person wasting petrol while going to the bank to deposit money. The paperwork of the Bank has also been reduced. |
Directly 2 Kgs |
| The bank statements have been finished as Webberz would simply be getting and storing soft copies of the bank transactions. |
2 kgs |
| All newspapers/magazines have been replaced with e-newspapers in all the branches worldwide. |
500 kgs |
| Paper collection days have been made under which all the used paper, test papers, external mail are collected. This paper is dense in fiber and can be burnt to produce heat. Being low in density this has to be briquetted and further used to fire earthen clay ovens. The sister-restaurants in New York and Amritsar are using the briquetted material to save more wood. |
10,000 kgs |
| All new institutes would be environment friendly. There would be natural ventilation and sunlight. Glass bricks are being used where possible. A model of IN-ASR-03 (Lawrence Road Branch, Amritsar, India) has been constructed keeping natural sunlight in mind. Dark colors have been avoided to provide better reflection and minimisation of airconditioning. |
Estimate yet to be calculated. |
| Grand Total |
12,604 kgs/year |
Assuming the net weight of a tree = 500 kgs this would be approximately 25 trees/year.
Reducing Carbon Footprint - Individuals
Here's a list of simple things you can do immediately.
- Turn it off when not in use (lights, television, DVD player, Hi Fi, computer etc. etc. ...) Click here to find out which electrical items in your household are contribute the most to your Carbon Footprint
- Turn down the air-conditioning slightly (try just 1 to 2 degrees C). Just 1 degree will help reduce your bill by about 8%.
- Turn down the water heating setting (just 2 degrees will make a significant saving)
- Fill your dish washer and washing machine with a full load - this will save you water, electricity, and washing powder.
- fill the kettle with only as much water as you need
- Do your weekly shopping in a single trip
- Hang out the washing to dry rather than tumble drying it
The following is a list of items that may take an initial investment, but should pay for themselves over the course of 1-4 years through savings on your energy bills.
- Fit energy saving light bulbs
- Install thermostatic valves on your radiators
- Insulate your hot water tank, your loft and your walls
- Installing cavity wall installation
- By installing 180mm thick loft insulation
- Recycle your grey water
- Replace your old fridge / freezer (if it is over 15 years old), with a new one with energy efficiency rating of "A"
- Replace your old air-conditioner with a new energy efficient model.
- Travel less and travel more carbon footprint friendly.
- Vehicle share to work, or for the kids school run.
- Use the bus or a train rather than your car
- For short journeys either walk or cycle
- Try to reduce the number of flights you take
- See if your employer will allow you to work from home one day a week
- Next time you replace your car - check out diesel engines. With one of these you can even make your own Biodiesel fuel.
- When staying in a hotel - turn the lights and air-conditioning off when you leave your hotel room, and ask for your room towels to be washed every other day, rather than every day
As well as your primary carbon footprint, there is also a secondary footprint that you cause through your buying habits.
- Don't buy bottled water if your tap water is safe to drink
- Buy local fruit and vegetables, or even try growing your own
- Buy foods that are in season locally
- Don't buy fresh fruit and vegetables which are out of season, they may have been flown in
- Reduce your consumption of meat
- Try to only buy products made close to home (look out and avoid items that are made in the distant lands)
- Buy organic produce
- Don't buy over packaged products
- Recycle as much as possible
