International Study
AustraliaIn 2009 the international student enrolments were at 631,935 from more than 217 different countries. From India alone 120,913 students had enrolled to undertake an Australian qualification in 2009. Education : There are 39 universities, of which 37 are public institutions and two are private. There are two Australian branches of overseas universities and three other self accrediting higher education institutions (Bachelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education, Melbourne College of Divinity and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School). Popular courses : The most popular courses among Indian students are business, information technology, engineering, science and hospitality. The vocational education sector is also popular. Eligibility : Indian students find it easy to transfer to the Australian education system due to the similarity in our 10+2+3 education structure. Class XII CBSE, ICSE and some state boards and Indian universities? graduation qualifications are accepted in Australia. Admissions are also subject to other requirements. SAT / GRE scores are not required. Work rules : As an international student, you can apply to the Australian Government?s Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) for a permit to work 20 hours per week during your studies and work full-time during vacations. You will be charged AUS$ 50 to apply for the work permit. You can only apply for a work permit after your arrival in Australia and you cannot work without obtaining one. Cost : An average international student in Australia will spend about AUS$360 a week on accommodation, food, clothing, entertainment, transport and telephone. Remember, though, that this figure depends on your location, lifestyle and even your course. Pre-departure tip : Students should not carry large amounts of money with them. For your initial days in Australia, AUS$ 1,000 cash and travellers? cheques is usually sufficient. Electrical appliances like music system, computer, etc, can be carried, but carry valid bills along. Australian voltage is 240Volts which is the same as India but you will require a different electrical plug or socket.
